Sparkan - GGJ 2018

Last week the Global Game Jam 2018 took place, and my Team and I took part. This year’s theme was “Transmission”. A short brainstorming was all it took to come up with endless ideas that could be linked to transmission. Our Nerd nature led us, as a first idea, to a game set inside the Wi-Fi network. After a few minutes we realised that putting the idea of transmission in a computer science context wouldn’t lead to great results, and that’s how Sparkan was born.

A game set in a world where electricity finally rose against the human genre that has been exploiting it for years. Meet Brighty, an hero with the power to flow just like current and transmit itself through conductive surfaces.

The protagonist, Brighty, can move by using the walls that conduct electricity or by firing special rays. His goal is, thanks to this teleportation system, to move the “Boss” (the bad guy) onto a special platform with the power to kill him.

The game was made with Unity and C#. Even though two of us had no idea how to use Unity or C#, we still managed to make a nice game, in its own small way even fun, which earned us the “Più sbatta special” award (roughly, the “Most Hassle Special”). This award wasn’t among the official prizes, but it was dedicated to us because our group was the youngest and also one of the smallest in the whole competition.
